Tohoku Kiritan and Zundamon are regional characters created by a Japanese company called SSS LLC in 2011, the same year as the Great East Japan Earthquake. They were designed to promote and support the revitalization of the Tohoku region.

Zundamon, in particular, gained massive popularity in Japan after a free synthetic voice based on the character was released in 2021. Since then, they've become widely known through voiceover videos on platforms like YouTube and have built a strong fanbase across the country.
