Some of the M1918A2 machine guns captured during combat operations in the Pacific Theater were taken into service by Japanese units and used as trophy weapons.

The M1918A2 is a modernized version of the American BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) adopted in the late 1930s. The A2 variant received magazine guides that sped up reloading, as well as two automatic fire modes — full-rate and reduced-rate. From the original BAR, the M1918A2 inherited a convenient sight with good visibility. The machine gun uses 7.62 mm cartridges and is equipped with a 20-round magazine.
